The history of a long case grandfather clock dates back to the mid seventeenth century. These clocks had a shorter pendulum because they needed wide swings. Long pendulums were impractical because the swings were as large as eighty degrees to one hundred degrees wide.

After two decades, by 1670, William Clement, an English clockmaker invented the anchor escapement. This went on to become a milestone in the achievement of time keeping industry because it instantly cut the degree of the pendulum swings. The clock required four to six degrees wide pendulum swings to keep the time. As a consequence, most of longcase clocks that were released had long narrow cases.

Initially, longcase clocks were manufactured with square faces but this showed a deviation after 1710. The clocks thereafter featured an arch just above the chunky dials. They used a mechanical power and years later gave way to the ‘pendulum movement’. A pendulum is a weight, which is suspended with a rod.

With the pass of time, the pendulum swings became imperceptible with naked eyes. This explains the existence of second pendulums where every swing takes a second.

These antique longcase clocks are still available in the market. The vintage design has inspired many watch companies to launch the modern version of these grandfather clocks.
